The Standardization and Evolution of Microbiological Terms in Modern China

Abstract  After the introduction of modern microbiology into China, the translation and unification of microbiological terms was the most pressing problem to be solved. From the late Qing dynasty to the Republic of China, pioneering work was done by some early medical communities. Since then, those scholars who had studied biology in the West, and the scientific communities they formed, played a major role in the translation and validation of microbiological terms. Based on previous studies, this paper summarizes and analyzes the process of the introduction and unification of microbiological terms in order to clarify the characteristics of the early development of microbiological terms in China.
