The Taxonomy of Chinese Trees and the Early Development of Chinese Forestry: From the Perspectives of Knowledge Transition and Localization |

Abstract Forestry science gradually disseminated into China from the late 19th century. In order to develop, it had to face the questions of the construction of the discipline and knowledge transition. A pioneer in this process was Chen Rong (1888~1971), whose book, Taxonomy of Chinese Trees(中国树木分类学), was the outstanding achievement of early forestry science in China. First, this paper will clarify the process of the dissemination of forestry knowledge, and analyze how forestry was established as a discipline. Then, I will present the importance of the book in the localization of forestry knowledge, noting also the reception the book received. Based on my assessment of the knowledge transition of Chinese forestry, it can be seen that as an applied science, it needed to consider two factors: Chinese forestry resources, including those specifically a target of research, and traditional forestry knowledge already available. These two aspects are the key factors in the localization of forestry in China.
